****New Date for CASIC Talk****

Postby E. Riley » Tue Feb 20, 2018 11:24 am

Title: CASIC Work in progress session
Date: 20th March 2018
Time: 1-3pm
Venue: DW0.30 Darwin Building, Keele University

Speaker: Helen Millward

‘Catharsis through theatre: creative methods of engagement’.

This paper explores the work of a theatrical outreach department in the UK via an ethnographic approach. In particular, the paper aims to demonstrate that the use of creative methods of engagement, such as cultural animation, has therapeutic effects on wellbeing and can ultimately lead to catharsis for participants and practitioners alike. The paper explores and reflects upon the potential for a ‘reversal of catharsis’ by pointing out that while creative methods of engagement can lead to catharsis for participants, theatrical outreach practitioners should also be mindful of internalizing the community’s problems as their own. This, the paper suggests, leads to burnout and emotional exhaustion.

Speaker: Dr Lindsay Hamilton
