“Diabetes – new angles on an old story”

Abstract: Type 1 diabetes is the predominant form of childhood diabetes and is increasing in incidence in the UK. The factors responsible for this increase are not well understood and the underlying pathology of the disease also remains unclear in humans. We are using a large collection of pancreas samples recovered from patients with recent-onset type 1 diabetes, to examine the molecular events that precipitate autoimmunity and the mechanisms that culminate in beta-cell loss in type 1 diabetes. The studies reveal a temporal sequence of immune cell infiltration of the islets of patients and imply that this process might be initiated by a persistent enteroviral infection of the insulin-secreting cells.
